Narendra Modi aims to rebrand and promote yoga

Narendra Modi aims to rebrand and promote yoga | #RamYogaSutra
Indian yogic tradition appears in Hindu texts written thousands of years ago. But the discipline bears scant resemblance to the popular exercise regime that has become a multibillion-dollar industry in the West, home of $90 Lululemon stretch pants and Mommy and Me fitness classes.

In recent weeks, Indian officials have begun efforts to reclaim yoga for the home team, making plans for a broad expansion of the wellness practice into all facets of civic life — including more than 600,000 schools, and thousands of hospitals and police training centers. They are spearheading efforts to promote and protect India’s most famous export, even quietly weighing a “geographical indication” for yoga, a trade protection normally given to region-specific goods such as Champagne from France or oranges from Florida.

What Have We Done To Yoga?

What Have We Done To Yoga? | RamYogasutra.com
Each summer solstice, thousands of yoga aficionados, and some novices, gather at Times Square to perform varying sequences of āsanas, or postures.

“If you find your heart needing to expand into 42nd Street, contract the shoulder blades,” advised a celebrity yoga instructor, her amplified words spreading through the square. There is beauty in such images—the body as extensive as a longing love, the mind as even as a length of breath—just as there is also wishful thinking. “We’ve turned Times Square into a temple … Yoga is magic!” gushed an instructor who had her students doing the “cosmic wave.” The event encapsulates what is best and worst about yoga today: its demotic, everywoman appeal and its fluffy, saccharine spirituality.

The Amazing Contortions of B.K.S. Iyengar

The Amazing Contortions of B.K.S. Iyengar | RamYogasutra.com
In its American form, yoga can sometimes seem like it's less about meditation than fitness, extreme sweatiness, and the absurdity of trying to balance on your head while wearing hot-pink lycra pants. But the practice has deep spiritual roots, dating back at least 2,500 years to philosophical traditions in ancient India. In the twentieth century, one of the most influential figures in spreading yoga beyond South Asia was B.K.S. Iyengar. He died on Wednesday at age 95 in the Indian city of Pune - he was still doing headstands into his early 90s.

Padma Vibhushan BKS Iyengar chats about yoga and his struggle for its survival

"I am proud to receive the honour (smiles). Although the people have accepted this art (yog), and thousands are practising it, the government has been hesitant in accepting it as one of the most noble arts, science and philosophies in our country. With this honour, I think the government is opening its eyes. I hope many more yoga sadhakas are given this honour. It’s not a business award, but an award for us to go deeper into the subject. I hope it serves as a stepping stone for the younger generation."
